S.L.E. Lupus Foundation Recognized as Model of Community Service
Published Paper Demonstrates Value of Multi-disciplinary Collaboration Between
Social Workers and Medical Professionals
 How social workers can help with the particular emotional and social needs of people with a chronic and unpredictable disease like lupus is gained increasing attention. We are proud that the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation was invited to co-author a paper in the peer-reviewed social work journal Social Work in Health Care on how our community outreach program effectively addresses these issues.
As noted in the press release announcing this distinguished publication, the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation’s 12-year old Lupus Cooperative of New York (LCNY) is a grassroots, community-based effort that assists individuals with lupus through direct support services that include help resolving difficulties related to healthcare, housing, employment, personal finances, education, and emotional issues.
Co-author Wendy Schudrich, MSW, Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University notes, “The S.L.E. Foundation is an excellent example of how the social work field can make a real difference in patient lives through peer support, social services and community outreach programs. Their program demonstrates the value of working with existing medical and community resources to provide psychosocial support to vulnerable populations in underserved urban neighborhoods.”
The special issue of Social Work in Health Care called “Psychosocial Impact of Lupus: Social Work's Role and Function,” was spearheaded by Nancy Beckerman, CSW, ACSW, DSW, Yeshiva University. Contributors include leading several leading physicians in lupus treatment and research from NYU Langone Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Hospital for Special Surgery.
