It’s Women’s History Month - the time presidential proclamations for over 20 years have designated to highlight women’s contributions to America. And today on International Women’s Day, we recognize all the women who make lupus research their mission - the Lupus Research Alliance grantees, scientific advisors, Board members, leadership and staff along with all our supporters, Walkers and donors!

Women Researchers Determined to Beat Lupus -
a Disease that Targets Mostly Women
28 brilliant women currently hold significant grants from the Lupus Research Alliance, and each one is making a difference. Read about their discoveries from just this year alone!
  • A study led by Dr. Vicki Rubin Kelley of Brigham and Women’s Hospital suggests that blocking a molecule made by some cells in the kidney could reduce the amount of organ damage.
  • Jane Salmon, MD and her team at the Hospital for Special Surgery discovered that enhancing the ability of the lining of the blood vessels to act as a barrier and limit escape of harmful molecules can block inflammatory damage in organs and tissues.
  • By uncovering how some killer viruses beat our immune system, Elina Zuniga, PhD and her colleagues partly funded by the Lupus Research Alliance have identified a potential new way to treat lupus.
  • With her grant from the Lupus Research Alliance, Mariana Kaplan, MDand colleagues at NIAMS, may have discovered why patients with lupus are at risk for heart disease.

This year will feature a conversation with a special woman of achievement, Campbell Brown, VP of Global News Partnerships at Facebook. Former co-anchor for NBC and CNN, Campbell is also an ardent activist for education reform.
