Elizabeth Yuen, 18, was diagnosed with lupus at age nine—and her goal is to one day become a pediatric rheumatologist. While spending the summer away from home, she developed a severe infection, which was treated quickly. However, many young adults are not so lucky—and like Yuen, often don’t realize they’re in distress. They’ve spent their childhoods largely being taken care of by mom and dad, and by the pediatric health care system, and the transition to caring for themselves as adults is challenging.

Ask the Experts is a series of educational talks and presentations on a variety of topics designed to provide you with important information about living with lupus. This month, Dr. Ronenn Roubenoff is presenting on the topic of Nutrition and Lupus. After reviewing the presentation, submit a question to Dr. Roubenoff by no later than January 15, 2013. 15 questions will be selected and answered on this topic. Lupus Research Presented at 2012 American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting
Key studies on lupus were presented recently during the 2012 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) scientific meeting. Researchers presented results of a seven-year study on the safety and efficacy of Benlysta or belimumab, and reported findings from clinical trials for two potential new treatments for lupus, Lupuzor and Rontalizumab.

There is no special diet for lupus. In general, you should try to eat a nutritious, well-balanced, and varied diet that contains plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, moderate amounts of meats, poultry, and oily fish. READ MORE
